It might still be April, but on the minds of many Keene residents is October 22’s Pumpkin Fest.
To start off their April 19 meeting, Student Assembly had an hour-long discussion with about what the Keene State College student body can do to make sure this year’s Pumpkin Fest isn’t marred with the stories of riots and alcoholism that are said to have caused the end of Pumpkin Fest last year.
Ruth Sterling, of Sterling Design, and Mike Haines, former Dean of Art’s and Humanities at KSC, presented their ideas for Pumpkin Fest, and looked for input from the assembly on what might be done to help students have a better experience with the event.
“I want to figure out how to wholesomely involve 18 to 25-year- olds in the Pumpkin Festival,” Sterling said.
Student Body President Donnie Clemmenson rebuked Sterling’s comment, saying the college does as much as it can to control the campus population.
“I don’t think you can sit here and say it is Keene State students’ fault,” Clemmenson said.
According to Haines, there were 77 arrests during last year’s Pumpkin Fest, only two of which were KSC students. He said while clearly the numbers show the problem isn’t KSC students, the perception is still there.
“Unfortunately, we can’t stop it, but is there any way we can turn it down?” Haines questioned.
Some suggestions that were offered up included limiting the number of guests that on-campus students can have that weekend, having graphic design majors create an ad campaign, or even clarifying that the college only has so much control over what students do when they don’t live on campus.
Student Body Vice President Colin Daly said as a Resident Assistant, he has seen that the problem isn’t necessarily the KSC students.
“It’s not our students that cause the problems, it’s students’ friends that don’t come here,” Daly said.
At the end of the discussion Sterling suggested that she is trying to form a “task force” consisting of students, alumni, parents, and community members to look into what the problem is and how to solve it.
After the Pumpkin Fest discussion, the assembly approved a funding request for KTV to buy a DVD duplicator and discussed the success of March on Concord on Monday, April 18.
