During the 557th meeting of the College Senate, the body approved a motion to change the KSC degree standard to permit a three-year Applied Professional Bachelor’s degree. The minimum number of credits required for the Applied Professional Bachelor’s degree would be 92 because Keene State uses a 4-credit system.
The Applied Professional Bachelor’s degree would require that students complete all of the GEE requirements, minus the eight credits of electives. Within the 32 required GEE credits, four must be at the 300 or 400 level.
“One of these things that we discussed at length in the rationale for [an Applied Bachelor’s degree proposal] was that this came from the faculty,” Greg Knouff, chair of the Academic Policy and Standards Committee, said. “It was well thought out and clearly researched. Something that would definitely benefit the college.”
The senate also voted to establish GEE topics courses but not allow experimental courses to count toward general education.
Courses would use the 190 course number for lower-level courses and the 390 course number for upper-level courses in the program. Additionally, every department’s GEE topics course shell will designate a single GEE tag: College Writing, Quantitative Literacy, Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Civic Engagement, Intercultural Perspectives or Sustainability and Well-being. GEE courses in the liberal arts, however, may have more than one tag.
The senate also approved revisions to the B.A. in Data Analytics and the B.A. in History and Archives.
Nick Germana, chair of the Curriculum Committee, described the revision to the B.A. in Data Analytics. “There was one class that we had a couple of ‘choose one from this category, choose one from this category,’ and they had that one class in both categories,” Germana said. “This is simply removing it from one category.”
Germana said the revision to the B.A. in History and Archives changes the program’s title to reflect a change in focus. “One is we had a Master’s degree in history and archives, and this is in nature with the Master’s degree,” Germana said. ”We have quite a bit of students taking advantage of the four-plus-one program, so we want to include as part of the regular curriculum exposure to archival practices and technologies.”
