On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Keene State Women’s Soccer team lost 1-3 against the University of Southern Maine (USM) Huskies. The first half of the game was scoreless, however, the second half picked up into a four-goal battle.
Neither of the teams was able to generate a statistic-driven offense in the first 45 minutes of the game. The Owls recorded their first and only shot of the first half in the sixth minute. First-year goalkeeper Michaela DiCicco ensured the first half of the game remained scoreless, obtaining a save late in the half.
The Owls quickly changed the tempo of the second half of the game by capitalizing on a defensive mistake by USM. The first 40 seconds of the second half was a celebratory moment for sophomore midfielder Kayla DiPasquale, who scored her first goal of her season and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead.
However, the tempo not only changed for the Owls but for the USM Huskies as well. USM sophomore Lexi Morin scored twice to put the Huskies ahead. Huskies midfielder Ani Roberts extended their lead from a converted penalty kick.
The Owls were unable to get back into the game, with 2 attempted shots missing the target late in the game, sending the victory to USM.
DiCicco ended the game with three saves for the Owls. Sophomore forward Kylie Rapoza finished with one shot and another shot on goal. Although the Owls lost, they held the advantage in shots (12-5) as well as shots on goal (6-2).
The loss against the University of Southern Maine put the Keene State Women’s Soccer team at 3-5-2.
