This week, Keene State’s Women’s Softball team (16-15) headed down to Massachusetts to take on Westfield State University (31-1). This was a double-header played on Sunday, April 26, with the first game starting at 12 p.m. Keene State came into the game after a double-header loss at Rhode Island College, managing only two total runs during both games.
The first game of the day started quietly until the bottom of the second inning, when all hell broke loose. Westfield State’s first score of the game came from a wild pitch. Not long after, two RBIs made the score 0-3 in favor of the Westfield Owls. It didn’t end there, not even close. Two more RBIs by senior third base Hannah Wodecki increased the score by two once more. To cap off the second, another two RBIs brought the score to 0-7, all this occurring just in the bottom of the second. The top of the third remained all quiet, then the bottom brought some more action. Three more scores brought the game’s score to a whopping 0-10 in favor of Westfield State.
At the top of the fourth, Keene State managed to get a run on the board, courtesy of sophomore catcher/utility Abby Weiterman. At the top of the fifth, first-year outfielder Anna Gostkowski scored, followed by junior catcher/shortstop Elyse Picard to make it 3-10. The game ended with the fifth inning, and Westfield State added another score at the end to make the final 3-11.
The 2 p.m game didn’t go much better. By the end of the first inning, Westfield State managed to make the score 0-3 and shut out Keene State until the 5th. Picard scored an RBI to put the first points on the board for the Owls. It remained scoreless until the top of the seventh. Junior first base/utility Lily Mandel and first-year infielder Cainen Avery also scored off RBIs towards the end of the seventh, though it was fruitless as the game was already sealed to a Westfield State 3-5 win.
After this defeat on the road, the Owls come back home this week to play another double-header on Tuesday, April 28, against Plymouth State University.
