Franklin Pierce University is planning to offer a Bachelor of Science in biotechnology next fall, the school recently announced.
The degree will align with the university’s health science program and its other STEM-based undergraduate degrees, according to a news release Franklin Pierce issued Monday. The school will also offer a Certificate in Biotechnology Laboratory Skills.
Franklin Pierce, which is at 40 University Drive in Rindge, said the new major is designed to give students the “skills, knowledge, and experience to enter careers in the broad biomedical sciences industries,” or prepare them to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree in one of Franklin Pierce’s health science programs.
Biotechnology is the application of biological processes to technologies, according to a webpage by the University of New Hampshire, which has a similar program.
President Peter Eden said in Monday’s news release that, having spent years in the biopharmaceutical industry, he has seen the wide range of applications of a biotech background.
“Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing and in-demand career fields, and one of the most exciting,” Eden said. “With the emergence of AI and bioinformatics, the next wave of biotech graduates will have the tools to determine disease causation and optimal treatment — and they’ll have job security and satisfaction whether they are in a lab, in a clinical setting, or working in successful companies and organizations devoted to improving lives.”
