The 2026 World Baseball Classic will be occurring over the course of the next couple of weeks– an international baseball tournament where the top players of baseball leagues around the world compete and represent their home countries in an effort to promote the sport worldwide. However, this is an interesting time for countries to compete against each other. Tensions are high around the world, with Israel and the United States engaged in airstrikes against Iran, each strike proving deadly as the days pass.
After a week of the ongoing conflict, neither has been banned from competing in the baseball tournaments. I believe that it’s weird, considering Russia was banned on the spot for starting a war with its neighbor, Ukraine. So why isn’t the same energy kept for both Israel and the U.S.? I can think of some reasons why.
For starters, stadiums in both Houston and Miami are hosting games during the WBC and it probably wouldn’t be great to ban one of the host countries. Second, does the conflict need to meet certain criteria for a country to be banned? The current war with Iran has been limited to mostly air and naval strikes without any ground invasion, while the war in Ukraine involved a massive invasion by the Russian army at the start. I would love to know if these things bear any weight on determining which countries can and cannot compete in these games. Then there’s my final reason. The United States essentially created modern-day baseball and holds a massive amount of influence within the sport. Is it possible that no country wants to challenge the superpower that is the United States? The latter is probably digging too deep into it, but could, nonetheless, be considered. Whatever the reasoning may be, I believe that it’s abundantly clear that no actions will be taken toward the United States or Israel regarding these games. No one wants to challenge the status quo.
