The L.P. Young Student Center is an ever-bustling place. Students, faculty and campus visitors filter in and out seeking frothy coffees from Starbucks, a salty lunch from Lloyd’s Marketplace or a quiet place to unwind and chat with friends or study. As a campus hub for social activity, there are lots of times one can enter the building to find pop-up tables run by various on-campus organizations, but it’s not every day you see tables with a sweet, colorful spread of homemade baked goods.
Such a treat could be found this past week as the KSC chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon (DPhiE) hosted a bake sale in the Student Center Monday through Friday from 12-4 p.m. The sale featured a table of wrapped desserts baked by the sisters of DPhiE for anyone to stop in and buy.
“We’re planning to attend the international leadership forum in Charlotte coming up, so we’re running the sale to raise money for the costs of plane tickets and food and such,” junior Emily Hussey, vice president of operations for DPhiE, said.
“We’re selling cookies and brownies and we have gluten-free options and peanut-free options, so there’s hopefully something for everyone,” Arianna Eovine, another junior and vice president of membership development for the sorority, said. “Sisters from all parts of the chapter took part in baking for the sale, and there’s always a sister here selling. We have alternating shifts so it’s not too much on anyone, but it’s been a lot of fun.”
Both VPs spoke on their favorite part of operating the sale. “For me, it’s probably been interacting with the students. It’s nice to see everyone and to see people buying what we’ve made,” Hussey said.
“I’d have to second that, interacting with the students,” Eovine agreed.
Speaking on what DPhiE stands for, Eovine said if students are looking for community, the sorority is the place to go.
“Anyone who’s looking for a positive place to belong or close-knit, lifelong friends should definitely be interested in joining,” she said. “It’s a really positive community.”
“We’re going to be running recruitment all of February, every organization on campus is, so students who are thinking about rushing should come check us out,” Hussey said.
Hussey also gave information on more tabling that DPhiE will be doing in the future. “We will be having our ANAD tabling which fundraises for one of our philanthropies Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders from March 2-6,” Hussey said. “We will be tabling in the student center raising money and awareness from 11 a.m to 2 p.m every day that week.”
DPhiE ultimately raised a total of $235 from the bake sale.
