Earlier this month, the music department at Keene State College welcomed a new student advisory board. Four students from within the music department across a variety of majors stepped up to fulfill these roles.
During the start of February, students in the music department were pitched the idea of having a student advisory board during a music workshop. The members of this new board are first-years Luke Steele and Riley McIntyre, sophomore Lily Roberge and junior Alannah Bloom, who was not available to give statements at this time.
“The process was basically like this,” McIntyre stated. “They asked for people in the music department who would like to step up and represent their peers.”
The students’ jobs, while not having set roles, are beginning to form and grow. The students on the board share a variety of grades, majors and connections to music.
Roberge spoke in support of the variety of the board. “We do have a bit of diversity when it comes to our majors,” they said. “We have two freshmen, one sophomore and a junior. All of us did end up being music education majors, however two of us were vocal while the other two were instrumental.”
“We basically just take care of any concerns the students may have about their curriculum, or anything going on in the building or in the department. We try to communicate the best we can to the faculty and get them the support that they need for the issue they are having,” McIntyre also said.
The board recently held its first meeting in which they threw around ideas about different positions on the board. However, at the time this article was published, nothing had been set in stone.
Steele said he wishes to continue on the path of music after having this opportunity.
“I want to be able to be a resource for students in the music department,” Steele said. “If there’s an issue going on in the department, I want to be someone who can help make that issue vocal and talk to the head of the department about it. I have such a love for music and the people in the department. I want to make sure they can really thrive.”
The board will continue forward with these four student members with new roles and positions for students on the board just on the horizon.
