As this year’s winter break fades into memory, students are now faced with a new semester and new classes. Many college courses require students to purchase materials for class that are not provided for free by the school, such as textbooks, art supplies and more.
While some students jump right up at the opportunity to purchase all of their required materials as early as possible, others enjoy waiting until their class begins to gain in-person knowledge on exactly what they need to purchase and where to get it and some procrastinate purchasing anything until the very last moment they can. Students on campus shared how they like to go about buying what they need once a new semester begins.
Some said the speed at which they purchase materials depends on circumstance. “For me, it depends on the price of the book,” first-year Dan Gorman said.
“It depends how many textbooks I have to get per class,” first-year Patrick Gleich added, “I try to get them at the earliest convenience, though.”
“I like to order my books online, but sometimes I wait to see how much I really need it,” Colin Linderman, another first-year, said.
For others, dishing out to buy books is low on their to-do list.
“I personally wait as long as possible,” sophomore Brad Herlihy said.
Another sophomore, Connor Pederson, seconded this notion. “I wait until the professor shows us that the book is absolutely needed in class, then I’ll get it.”
On the contrary, getting books is an immediate priority for others. “I order them as soon as the professor says we need them, I’m pretty on top of it,” first-year Katie Taylor said.
“I like to get them the first week of classes so I’m not behind,” first-year Connor Miller shared. Mariella Tsitsonis, another first-year, agreed.
“I like to get them the second week, that works for me,” first-year Allison Gough said.
While the conditions that push students to purchase their materials may vary, the demand for paid materials outside of class remains a part of the college experience between semesters.
