Over the last two weeks, Keene State’s Kappa Beta Gamma (KBG) sorority has taken up a residency in the lobby of the L.P. Young Student Center, as the organization has been tabling in support of its 50/50 raffle fundraiser.

The raffle is in support of KBG’s philanthropic partner, the Monadnock Humane Society in Swanzey, N.H., according to senior and KBG President Marissa Correia. 50 percent of the money raised in the raffle will be donated to the animal shelter, while the other 50 percent will be the prize for the raffle winner.

When KBG was first founded as a chapter at KSC, its members voted to select the Monadnock Humane Society as a local philanthropy because it was different from what other Greek organizations were doing, Correia said.

“We took notice of how many chapters on campus do human-related philanthropies and we wanted to diversify that whole section of Greek Life a little bit,” said Correia.

Correia also explained her personal connection to KBG’s philanthropic work as someone who loves animals.

“Animals mean more to me than most humans,” said Correia. “Being able to give back, especially to a smaller organization in our community rather than a larger one…That just means a lot to me.”

Philanthropic work is an important aspect of her sorority overall, Correia said, as it gives KBG members a common goal and is what separates them from just being a group of friends.

“We are friends, and I think that would be the same without this organization, but having that structured goal and being able to work together to really do something that betters our community and betters people other than ourselves brings value into our sisterhood,” said Correia.

Correia said the last day for raffle ticket sales will be Thursday, Nov. 20, before the drawing of the winner takes place on Sunday, Nov. 23. She said anyone is able to enter the raffle and encouraged everyone to do so.

“It’s a good time. Who doesn’t love a little bit of guilt-free gambling?”
