On Saturday, Nov. 15, the Keene State College Men’s Basketball team showed that its influence extends far beyond the court as the team hosted a community food drive during its highly anticipated home opener.
In the weeks leading up to the opener, the team and athletic department worked together with regional food pantries to identify essential needs. Marketing materials encouraged fans to bring non-perishable items, canned goods, pasta, cereal and shelf-stable proteins which would be collected at the entrance by volunteers from both the men’s and women’s basketball programs.
Student and athletics commentator Ryan Goodwin commented on the drive. “It’s good to be able to provide food to the people who don’t have food, including college kids who might not have the funds to afford food,” Goodwin said.
Many fans were carrying bags filled with food donations in support of the cause. For the Owls, they acknowledged that their athletic platform could inspire meaningful action and added an extra layer of motivation.
Sophomore and center Kareem Porter Jr. said, “I think it’s good for the school. Excited to play in front of our fans today.”
Keene State lost 78-73 to Western New England. Guard Jordan Cooper had 14 points, five rebounds and was aggressive getting to the line (6–10 FT) and splashed two threes.
Junior forward Wesley Odiase had 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and was efficient inside the arc (5–9 FG) and steady throughout. Senior guard Mitch Shettles put up 14 points 4–8 3PT and provided crucial perimeter scoring and tied for the team lead in points. First-year guard Allyn Wright tallied 13 points, four assists, strong playmaking presence and shot 5–9 from the field. Junior guard Joshua Williams added eight points, 2–4 3PT and added valuable scoring off the bench. Porter Jr. had 11 rebounds as he dominated on the glass, contributing a team-high rebound total.
KSC Athletics Director Marty Testo said, “It’s a great thing to do. A good opportunity to support The Hungry Owl.”
By the end of the night, plenty of food was collected, which is now ready to be distributed in time for the upcoming holiday season.
