Many students use shared spaces, including laundry rooms. When students leave their clothes in the washer or dryer for long periods of time, it can delay other students from being able to do laundry.
On Appian Way, the library and the student center, many students detailed experiences they have had in the laundry room, such as other students leaving their leftover laundry in the dryer or washer and forgetting a piece of clothing that ends up in someone else’s cycle, and gave etiquette tips to prevent issues from arising.
Junior Juju Lababidi talked about the importance of removing the lint from the inside of the dryer when you are done using it. “I find it annoying when people dry their clothes and leave the lint in there when I switch my clothes over,” Lababidi said. “For me, it is important that it is removed when you are done doing laundry because it is a fire hazard.”
Junior Sammie Smalick had some advice to give on proper laundry etiquette.
“Things that helped me specifically when it came to laundry was setting a timer for my clothes,” Smalick said. “I am pretty certain in different dorms they have posters around on what apps you can download to check when your clothes are done.”
Senior Emily Clark agreed with Smalick and had some advice on how to be more fair with laundry etiquette.
“I do not recommend keeping your clothes unattended because people like to steal things,” Clark said. “If you do, then set a timer.”
Clark continued, “I think it’s honestly fair if someone takes your clothes and relocated them if you haven’t moved it in at least two hours.”
Senior Haley Rogers said she is not perfect at getting her laundry done on time but agreed with Lababidi that it is important to remove the lint when done using the dryer.
“I like when the lint filter is emptied out before I move my clothes in the dryer,” Rogers said. “It not only makes a huge difference that your clothes will dry completely, but it does cause issues if it is not cleaned out completely or at all.”
Rogers continued, “It’s also important to not overfill the soap so it isn’t disgusting when other people use it.”
Another issue that students face in the laundry room is having to move people’s clothes over because of how long they have been sitting.
Senior Caden Ferland said, “There has been times in the past where I had to move people’s clothes because of all the dryers being taken up and people just let them sit there which can be annoying sometimes. There is not really a way to communicate with that person because sometimes I miss the person or never see the person, so I leave a note.”
First-year Julia Avery agreed and said, “Honestly, I am guilty of moving people’s clothes more frequently than I’d like, but people are just forgetful about their laundry, and if I need access to a washer or dryer, I wait for 45 minutes and check back again and see the clothes just sitting. I move it.”
