Students were evacuated from Huntress Hall around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
The Keene Fire Department arrived at the scene and investigated the building for potential fire or smoke. Captain Dan Nowill said there was a noticeable smoky odor in the building.
Nowill said the dorm building’s many open windows likely allowed some kind of smoky gas to waft in. He added he believed the odor may have been related to recent leniency on backyard campfires and other local controlled fires.
Nowill said he did not believe it was likely the odor was related to any of the wildfires in Canada. The wildfires have often affected the air quality in N.H. over the past year, according to NHPR.
Nowill said the fire department staff checked the HVAC system in Huntress and found no identifiable issues. Students reoccupied the building around 7:45.
