Keene State Women’s Lacrosse has had a historic year so far. Sitting currently at fourth place in the Little East Conference (LEC) standings, KSC went to battle with an out-of-conference team, Bridgewater State University (BSU), on Saturday, April 26, for the last game of the regular season.
Minutes into the start of the game, junior Tess Brown got the Owls on the board first. This was the first of Brown’s four goals in the contest. Quickly after, BSU answered with two goals for themselves to go ahead 2-1. Right before the end of the first quarter, there was a Lola connection as senior Lola Smith assisted first-year Lola Varricchione to tie the game.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, BSU kept the pedal to the metal and found two goals seconds after the whistle blew. The score now was 5-2. Senior Chase Gengras got herself on the box score with a goal at 8:30 left in the second quarter. Four minutes later, BSU canceled out this goal with one of its own. Taylor Carter scored her second goal of the game.
BSU player Camryn Gonsalves chose to one-up Carter. 20 seconds into the third, Gonsalves got her first of six goals on the day. Brown started the comeback for the Owls following the goal of Gonsalves. In a matter of two minutes, Brown scored two of three goals for the Owls, pushing KSC to a one-goal deficit. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, junior goalie Mabelle Bessette stood tall, making three saves to keep the score stale. In the last nine minutes of the third, there was a flurry of goals. Five of these goals came from BSU; one goal came from Keene State. BSU managed to score a goal with exactly one second left on the clock in the third, ending the quarter 12-7 in favor of BSU.
Keene State continued to knock on the door during the fourth, but BSU would not stop scoring. Gonsalves picked up three goals in the fourth to finish her six-goal campaign. Brown also scored her fourth goal of the game during the last quarter. The game concluded with a final score of 16-10. Keene State was handed its sixth loss of the year, and BSU improved to 13-4 on the season. Keene State fell to a 1-7 record all-time when facing BSU with this loss.
Thanks to an 11-6 regular season record and a 5-3 LEC record, Keene State secured its spot in the playoffs.
