As graduation approaches, the excitement for seniors rises. However, some students find themselves dealing with a senior slump as they finish the final stretch of their college journey.
Throughout campus, whether it be in the science center, Appian Way or the TDS Center, students have expressed what strategies, problems or advice they are overcoming during their senior year.
Senior Cindy Dong said she likes to go with the flow while dealing with senior slump.
Dong said, “I just did things that killed time, it goes by quicker than you think.”
Senior Ryan Rotigliano said taking things slow is the best way to do things.
“It is important to keep an eye on your mental health and try not to count down the days, enjoy them as they go.” Rotigliano said. “Don’t look at the countdown in the student center, even if you know what you’re doing after college it’s not really going to help because I personally think it will make you more stressed out.”
Students agreed that focusing on the present moment allowed them to navigate the challenges of senior year they came across.
Senior Matthew Wolseley said he likes to keep busy and that having things on your schedule is a crucial way to combat senior slump.
“For me specifically, going to the gym and having things or putting things on my schedule helped a lot, finding activities made it good for me,” Wolsely said.
Both senior Jordan Kroitzsh and Wolseley said it is very important to keep busy to avoid stress.
“I usually just hang out with friends. I recommended those seniors who live in a dorm to leave, which is very important.” Kroitzsh continued. “Having your mind distracted allows you not to be feeling like you’re in a slump, it is better for your mental health. For example, I play intramural volleyball and that helped a huge amount too.”
As graduation approaches, other students shared some advice to underclassmen who will eventually face senior year.
Senior Sarah Frederick said it is crucial to study so that it will not affect you later on. “In order to deal with senior slump, I would say setting time aside for studying and preparing for finals is very important,” Frederick said.
Frederick continued, “I regret not doing that my sophomore or junior year and it sucked I didn’t but it makes a huge difference when you do; most importantly studying with friends allows you to motivate each other.”
Senior Grayson Blanchard gave advice on things that he did to avoid senior slump and made his college experience worthwhile.
“I went in with the mindset that I am going to get this degree if I just keep pushing myself.” Blanchard said. “Even though it might feel like it’s so hard and that you want to quit, just think about how far you made it, it all works out in the end eventually.”
Senior Nirmala Tamang said she tried her best to balance activities in school to keep her mind occupied.
“I feel like my senior slump has gotten better than it was in the beginning of the semester because I just focused myself on what was the whole reason I came to college, that helped a lot,” Tamang said. “I reminded myself what my goal was before and throughout the years of being in college. It allowed me to be motivated to find jobs and try to wrap up my chapter I’m currently in now and move on to the next chapter of my life.”
