After a season of breaking records, Keene State’s Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track teams traveled to Providence, Rhode Island and competed in the Little East Conference (LEC) championships on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Starting with the women’s side, graduate student Maggie St. John dominated the 5000-meter run finishing in first place, and first-year distance runner Kallie Warner followed in second. Junior Anna O’Reilly and St. John placed third and fourth in the 1000-meter run as well.
Senior Sarah Ames took home second in the 800-meter event as well as the one-mile event, while sophomore Bryn Dickinson placed third in the 600-meter run.
Junior Molly Lu McKellar earned a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles event, not far off from the first-place runner out of University of Massachusetts Boston. In another 60-meter event (dash), first-year Keely Giordano finished in first place.
With all of these finishes along with a few more by some Owls, the KSC Women’s Indoor Track team finished second at the LEC’s, trailing Southern Maine by 26 points.
The men’s side had a win in the 4×200 meter relay including juniors Jonathan DeAguiar, Kyle Thomas, Aidan Law and first-year Sean Von Ranson. Their time beat out Plymouth State by .58 to take home gold for the event. Thomas would go on to place third in the 60-meter dash.
Law also finished second in the long jump event and earned another silver in the 200-meter dash.
Sophomore Griffin Urnezis took home bronze in the mile run as well as fourth in the 3000. Another sophomore, Keith O’Donnell, grabbed third in the 600-meter run.
Sophomore Caden Latuillipe grabbed a silver in the pole vault event, and first-year Jaden Baker grabbed third in the shot-put.
Fifth-year Jake Velazquez earned a first-place finish in the 5000-meter run, setting a new LEC championship record with a time of 15:06.46.
A few more fourth and fifth-place finishes in various events would place the Owls at third for the LEC championships.
Both teams will make their next appearance at the New England Division III Championship in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday, March 1.
