The formal recruitment process for KSC’s fraternity community has concluded with leadership from Delta Tau Delta (Kappa Lambda chapter) and Sigma Pi (Iota Rho chapter) expressing optimism for the future of their organizations.
Representatives from Alpha Sigma Phi (Zeta Xi chapter), the third active fraternity at KSC, were unable to be reached for comment.
The formal recruitment process, a four-day-long affair consisting of prospective members meeting the fraternities, open house events, invitational events and final bidding, was described as the largest recruitment class seen by the current leadership of Delta Tau Delta (Delt) and Sigma Pi, despite challenging weather.
According to senior and President of Sigma Pi Jacob Huber, a snow day on the second recruitment day forced planned events to take place in the L.P. Young Student Center instead of off-campus locations.
“This year was weird with the snow day. It probably did affect the amount of people showing up, and we did have a lighter participation on that day. It didn’t harm recruitment in any way and the Interfraternity Council did a great job of making things work despite all that,” said Huber.
Huber said interest in Sigma Pi was the largest he has seen during his time at Keene State College.
“This is our biggest recruitment class in a long while. We have eight recruitment brothers who are joining us and I’m really excited to welcome them and get them into things,” said Huber.
Delt is poised to welcome six new members post-recruitment week.
According to junior and President of Delt Charlie Baxter, fraternity recruitment takes place every semester, with the spring semester traditionally being the most successful.
“We recruit every semester, but because of how things work at Keene State, first-year students aren’t eligible until the spring semester so that they can build an established GPA. Our big recruitment cycle usually ends up being in the spring,” said Baxter.
Baxter said the spring recruitment cycle was the biggest Delt has seen in a long time.
“This is the biggest in our history and biggest in KSC Greek life at the moment,” said Baxter.
Baxter said joining a fraternity can be a great way to find community and have new experiences in college.
“I felt a little lost when I first came to college, and finding the brotherhood was really important. A big thing for me was building something new. At the time, Delta Tau Delta had five guys and I was able to help build something into full chapter status,” said Baxter.
“Building something new, making new friends and also professional development has been really rewarding and you have experiences and gain access to things you otherwise might never have the chance to,” added Baxter.
Sophomore and Director of Recruitment for Delta Tau Delta Andre Nickerson said he is excited to welcome the new members.
“Now that bid day has happened, we’ll be starting our new member education process and start them on their journey to becoming a Delta Tau Delta brother,” said Nickerson.
