Continuing their losing streak, KSC’s Women’s Ice Hockey faced another defeat on Saturday, Feb. 8 after losing against the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.
The first period started off quiet as the ladies entered the rink and got straight to work. First-year Ai Chung was the goalkeeper for this period claiming seven saves out of the total 15 shots that UNE took at our goal. At 18:07 KSC earned a power play after UNE play earned a two-minute penalty for body checking. With no goals from either team, the period ended with 10 shots on goal from KSC.
The second period began and at 00:07 the power play for KSC ended. KSC finally scored a point at 06:14 when first-year Ava Iantosca scored an even-strength goal (when both teams have six players on the ice) assisted by first-year Brianna Finke and senior Madison Mosca. At 15:57 and 17:33 UNE scored two goals on KSC.
KSC ended the second period with 17 shots on goal and one of them scored leaving the game at 1-2, with UNE in the lead.
The third period arrived steadily with ladies of KSC itching to get the upper hand. Tragedy struck at 5:01 when an injury timeout was called for a KSC player after a collision against a UNE player at the boards. After a 25-minute break, the players returned to the ice and continued for the last 15 minutes of the game. KSC fired 10 shots on goal before 13:34 when Finke earned a two-minute penalty for body checking. The clock hit 14:04 and UNE scored their last point against KSC, at the same time the KSC team received a 2-minute penalty for roughing, followed by a timeout called by KSC. Just as Finke’s penalty ran out, KSC is sent into a power play as one of UNE’s players is out for 2 minutes for tripping. Two shots are made during the power play and just as it ends at 16:21, senior Paige Henault receives a 2-minute penalty for holding. Chung received a two-minute penalty for cross-checking at 18:14 but did not leave the ice until 18:57 for KSC empty net. The last penalty was given to Henault just as the game ended after 10 minutes due to unsportsmanlike conduct.
The game against UNE ended 1-3.
