The KSC Film Society is bringing 12 new films to show at the Putnam Theater for this spring semester.
Showings started Friday, Jan. 24 with “Anora,” a 2024 film written and directed by Sean Baker. The film was described in a post on the film society’s Instagram page as a “Cinderella story” following a woman from New York as she impulsively marries a wealthy Russian man.
This will be followed by the film “Hundreds of Beavers” starting Friday, Jan. 31. Other films to be shown this semester include “Timecrimes,” “Io Capitano” and “The Substance.”
“I’m very excited for ‘Hundreds of Beavers’ because I’ve heard nothing but good things about that,” said junior Tyler Desjardins, vice president of Film Society. “Also ‘Evil Does Not Exist,’ [director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s] last film, ‘Drive My Car,’ we screened a couple years back, fantastic film.”
“And, of course, ‘The Substance,’” continued Desjardins. “That’s kind of the smash hit from what I’ve heard. I haven’t seen it, I’m excited for it.”
Desjardins also spoke on the process of selecting which movies Film Society will screen for both the KSC and Keene community.
“Every single weekend Film Society brings a new film to the Putnam Theater, the premier arthouse theater of Keene State College,” said Desjardins.
Each film is shown from Friday to Monday at 7 p.m., with an extra 3 p.m. matinee on Sundays.
“Near the end of the semester … the eboard comes together with a list of five to 15 films that we want to have,” continued Desjardins. “We put all of them together, then we watch every trailer in our e-board meetings. Then we whittle down what we think will fit as a Putnam movie and what will not fit.”
Many of the movies that the Film Society shows have won or are nominated for awards, even if some might be less well-known than others. For instance, “Anora” won several Boston Society of Film Critics (BSFC) awards including “Best Film” and “Best Director” and A24’s “Sing Sing” is nominated for several Oscar and BAFTA awards including “Best Lead Actor.”
Each Film Society screening is open to all KSC students and to the general public. Tickets to each show are $2 for KSC students, $5 for Keene residents, $4 for senior citizens and free for all Film Society members.
