Keene State’s IT department has been working on some projects for this upcoming semester. There has been an ongoing transition from Zoom to Microsoft Teams and some of the students have been having technological difficulties at the start of the year.

Elise Morrissette, help desk manager, shared some of the plans that the department has for this upcoming semester.

“Over the course of the semester, we’ll be working on implementing mobile release for the print kiosks that are around campus,” Morrissette said. “The print kiosks for students are in five or six locations, such as TDS, the science center, Rhodes Hall, Elliot, the student center and the library. Right now you have to walk up and type in your username but we’re testing and moving forward with mobile release, so you’ll be able to release from mobile devices.”

Jasper Keyes, a first-year, shared some of the issues that he had been having with the Wi-Fi network.

“It was pretty nerve-racking to move back onto campus and not be able to look at class schedules and Canvas syllabuses because our devices couldn’t connect to the Wi-Fi,” said Keyes. “I was able to work around this with mobile hotspots, but I know many people can’t afford to use their data for that, so the initial unreliability of the campus Wi-Fi added a lot of undue stress to the first few days of the semester.”

Morrissette clarified what the cause of the issues was and how the IT department worked to fix them.

“We were ultimately notified on Sunday the 26th and within two hours we had it resolved,” Morrissette said. “The week prior some wireless code was updated on all of the access points across campus. The issue wasn’t so much a routing issue as much as it was a rule issue, so the fix was to put in a new rule with the appropriate amount of IPs in the available pool to help students regain connection.”

Morrissette also shared that the IT department is planning on upgrading its computer system and updating the computers to Windows 11.
