Alpha Sigma Phi and Phi Sigma Sigma had the room filled with excitement as they hosted the third annual Spelling Bee in the Night Owl Cafe (NOC).
The event was held on Wednesday, Nov. 20 and began at 7 p.m. This event was sponsored by the KSC Panhellenic Council.
As soon as the event started each participant shared their first and last name as well as a fact about themselves.
Junior Austin Bartnicki, vice president of academic success for Alpha Sigma Phi, stated, “There are 16 contestants who signed up, and more stragglers who want to join later or couldn’t join right at 7:00 p.m. are able to check in at the last minute and get up on stage by the latest time of 7:45 p.m.”
The participants could ask for the spelling word to be used in a sentence, a place of origin or have the word repeated to them once. Each participant was allowed two misspelled words.
After each round, the audience members participated in trivia questions. They were able to go up to the stage and read questions or make up their own questions or jokes they had. An example of a question was, “What building on campus used to be Spaulding Gym?” to which the answer was Rhodes Hall.
Whether the audience members got the question correct or incorrect, candy was passed out to the audience.
President of Alpha Sigma Phi Ian Carter said he had no preparation in regard to this spelling bee.
Carter stated, “I do not know how many rounds I will make it but until I can’t go anymore.”
“One of my sisters is participating in this and I wanted to come and have a great time with them as well as support her,” said sophomore Mia Perfetto.
“I am excited to see what words are going to be called out today and for them to spell,” added sophomore Hailey O’Brien. “I am also here supporting my friend so I am excited how many rounds she will last for.”
The top three left on stage were seniors Hannah Alback, Sarah Grindord and junior Ellie DelSignore. DelSignore won the competition and received a $25 gift card to Brewbakers.
DelSignore stated, “It was pretty awesome winning, I had fun. This was my first time participating in the spelling bee although I wanted to participate last year. I just didn’t have time.”
