The Keene State Field Hockey team was back in action at home on Saturday, Oct. 19 taking on the Western Connecticut State University Wolves.
Coming off of a loss at home, the Owls were looking to bounce back and grab another win in the Little East Conference (LEC).
Before the game started, Keene State’s seniors were recognized for senior day. Senior captains Irini Stefanakos, Hannah Wood and Molly Murray were joined by senior student assistant coach Ashley Enis as they were celebrated for all they have done for the school and the team.
Once the game started, the Owls took no time getting on the board. Sophomore forward Meghan Daileanes got the party started just over three minutes into the game, deflecting a shot from Stefanakos and finding the back of the net. A little over three minutes later, junior forward Grace Bazin tacked on another for Keene State, putting home a rebound from Stefanakos.
Just before the end of the first quarter, Stefanakos got on the scoresheet herself, giving the Owls a three-goal lead. Then just over two minutes later, Daileanes tallied her second of the afternoon, making it 4-0 Keene.
The Wolves were able to cut the Owls’ lead in half, with two quick strikes. However, the Owls were able to get both goals back in a span of 58 seconds, with Daileanes completing a first-half hat-trick and Bazin recording her second shortly after. Keene State went into the break leading 6-2.
The Owls offense did not let up in the second half, as just about 10 minutes into the half, Murray tipped in a pass from Stefanakos yet again. About six minutes later, Bazin completed a hat-trick of her own. To start the fourth quarter, junior forward Jennifer Erickson added another goal, giving the Owls a nine-goal lead just three minutes into the quarter.
With about four minutes remaining, Reagan Schoen fired one into the back of the net for Western Connecticut State, but the game was long lost. With just under two minutes to go, first-year Drea DeFreitas scored her first career collegiate goal, putting the Owls in a double-digit lead.
The 10-3 win for the Owls kept them perfect in conference play and improved them to 13-3 on the season.
The Keene State Field Hockey team will travel to Eastern Connecticut State University to take on the LEC opponent on Saturday, Oct. 26.
