The Keene State Ultimate Frisbee team traveled to Maine last weekend for a two-day tournament called Lobster Pot to compete against other teams from New England.
On Friday, Oct. 25, the KSC team traveled to Portland Maine to attend the event. In comparison to the previous year, the Owls have grown in their abilities and roster size which helped them take home two wins compared to the zero wins last year.
Assistant Captain junior Matthew Sturtevant commented, “I started Ultimate Frisbee in the fall as a freshman so I’ve been there since the start when we had five active members. We brought 20 to Lobster Pot and didn’t even bring everyone. So we’re definitely a growing team.”
The team is still young with a majority of the members being first-years and sophomores, a few juniors and one senior. The team plans to continue to grow the program to teach and show new members the game in a learning environment outside of the field as well.
“We notice there are things we needed to work on during that game on Saturday which we have on video. We have a film session planned out to go over film and to work on things defensively,” said Sturtevant.
During the first day of the tournament, the Owls started off with their first two games ending in losses for both. In the third game however, they made a comeback and won 11-10 on the last point against Binghamton University, giving Keene State their first win in the tournament.
Injured sophomore Patrick Dumont who attended the event to cheer on his team commented, “We got our first win with a backhand up the right sideline, I was able to hobble on one foot all the way to the endzone and hugged my teammate who had just scored.”
The team came together with 20 members attending and stayed in an Airbnb where they were able to spend quality time together and make deeper connections. Sturtevant said, “To have that bonding experience while making the trip and staying at the Airbnb for a few nights is great to get to know everyone better and to also build your name on the team.”
On Sunday, Oct. 20, the second day of the tournament, Keene State won again in the playoffs in a game against MIT. They were unfortunately knocked out of the tournament however in their next match against Bentley. In comparison to the previous year when they won none of their games at Lobster Pot, the Owls showed great improvement.
The next tournament is being held at Assumption University in early November and after their performance at Lobster Pot, they were invited to the upcoming tournament being held by Bentley.
