Keene State’s Field Hockey team secured their third win of the season against Worcester State on Saturday, Sept. 7 by a core of 4-0.
The Owls came into Saturday’s matchup riding off of two straight wins and hoping to carry on the win streak. That energy ignited a hot start from Keene State as they scored four minutes into the game to grab an early lead. The early goal came from sophomore Meghan Daileanes to put the Owls up.
A load of opportunities for Keene State led to another goal less than two minutes later, as junior Grace Bazin added to the Owl’s early advantage. A total of ten shots were fired at the Lancers’ goaltender throughout the first quarter which resulted in a 2-0 lead as the first quarter came to an end.
The second quarter saw much of the same intensity from the Owls, getting eight shots off before Daileanes scored her second goal of the day. The score was 3-0 as the half came to a close.
The Owls began the second half in the driver’s seat as Worcester State had yet to take a single shot on net, while the visitors had taken 20. Worcester State’s undisciplined play also led to Keene State taking 17 penalty corners in the first half, giving up any control of the game.
Less than five minutes into the second half the Owl’s generated their fourth and final goal scored by Bazin for her second goal of the game.
Keene State kept its foot on the pedal, negating any opportunities that the Lancers attempted to generate. The dominance by the Owls continued into the final quarter of play, being up by four.
The fourth quarter saw a lot of back-and-forth play as Worcester State tried to claw back into a game that seemed hopeless. Keene State’s strong defense was stagnant in keeping the Lancers far away from any chance of bringing this game closer.
Keene State’s field hockey team fended off the rest of Worcester State’s attempts to score and ended the game with a 4-0 win for the Owls. This marks the Owls’ third straight win and second shutout of the hot season.
The team will host undefeated New England College, another out-of-conference matchup that the Owls will play at the Owl Athletic Complex on Thursday, Sept. 12.
