KSC students were able to treat themselves to some self-care last week.
On Wednesday, August 4, the Student Involvement Office set up a table in the Student Center where anyone could come by and make a free jar of body scrub. Coconut oil, various textures of salt or sugar and aromatic flowers were made available as ingredients.
“It’s just to have a nice weekly wellness break for students mid-week,” said Senior Coordinator for Student Involvement Emily Alexander. “There’ll be different topics every week, so this week at the first one is body scrubs and self-care. And other ones might be … gratitude cards or building a fruit cup. And they’re always free.”
“We started them last year and we probably had between 75 to 120 students at each one,” continued Alexander. “So they’re pretty popular.” Students who stopped to make a jar of body scrub expressed an appreciation for the Wellness Wednesdays.
“We’re having a stressful day and so we wanted to relax and we thought we might as well make a little self-care for us,” said senior Eve Smith. “I’m excited, I can take a nice shower and use my new scrub I just made.”
Some students had not known about the event in advance but said they enjoyed it and would be willing to come back to another Wellness
Wednesday in the future.
“I just came out of class, came in here, I was … looking to get food and they were here,” said senior Iz Falcetti. “I know everyone likes free stuff, and I know these [Wellness Wednesdays] are a new thing they’re trying to do.”
“I like [the event], I like body scrubs, I like smelling good, I like feeling good,” said first-year Faith Gianunzio. “I just kind of stumbled upon [this event] but I’ll definitely be back. I love wellness and health.”
The Student Involvement Center is also coming out with a new points system this year, according to Alexander. Students were able to get points by participating in this Wellness Wednesday, but they will also get more chances at future events.
“When you log on to OwlNet, you’ll see Hootie Spirit Points,” said Alexander. “Each event will be worth a certain amount of Hootie Spirit Points that you’ll be able to cash in for prizes at certain points in the semester.”
To get their points, students must check in using their student ID with the Student Involvement member running the event. There will be more information coming out about this new points system at a later date.
