Move-in day was not too different from previous years, except for those living in Carle Hall, one of three first-year residence halls on campus.
Carle is currently undergoing a demolition-focused project meant to open up the building’s lobby and create a more welcoming space for students.
“We’re actually looking to be done probably a couple of weeks earlier than anticipated so the contractor is doing a good job to try to get in and out as quick as possible but it’s been a very smooth project so far,” Colin Burdick, assistant director of facilities services, told The Equinox.
The project began in the summer and was in the planning process long before then. The Equinox previously reported on the prevalence of vandalism in the hall throughout the 2022-2023 academic year. One of the goals of the project was to curb the behavior by making the dorm more community-centric.
Burdick said the team has finished painting and priming the ceilings, as well as having put flooring down. Currently, the contractors are working on equipment and ventilation installation. Burdick anticipates the construction side of things to be completed by the end of September.
“I probably won’t get furniture until mid-October, so there’ll probably be a little lull where we’re just touching things up on the construction side, waiting for the furniture to come in, but we’ll meet with [Transitions and] Community Living (TCL) as well, so we’ll come up with a game plan to see when we want to open it,” Burdick explained.
