Students from KSC’s nutrition program are serving up a new club for students.
The Nutrition Club is new on campus although it formed during last year’s spring semester. However, this year they will be hosting events and having general meetings.
“The purpose of the Nutrition Club is to broaden students’ intellectual understanding of nutrition and provide support to those looking to get a job in the field of nutrition,” reads their KSC Presence page.
The club was created by students majoring or minoring in nutrition who wanted to share their interests and knowledge in healthy foods.
“I know that in years prior we had SNAKS, which was a similar club … that tried to do the same thing, they were all about nutrition and … promoting nutrition and … healthy eating awareness,” said junior Benjamin Harper, the social media coordinator for the Nutrition Club. “But that kind of phased out so Grace [club president] was like, ‘Hey, let’s restart this.’”
“At the Nutrition Club … we wanted to do food labs, which involve cooking, and then food demos,” continued Harper. “Working with people in creating new recipes … we wanted to get really involved and work with the on-campus food pantry, the Hungry Owl … and fundraise and bring more awareness around that.”
The Nutrition Club has shown up to a few on-campus events.
“We haven’t really done any general meetings yet but we’ve come together a couple times as e-board and we’ve talked about future activities and plans,” said Harper. “We’ve also done maybe one or two tabling events where people have come up and written down if they were interested.”
“I think spring semester was really establishing the Nutrition Club as an idea and then establishing our e-board,” said junior Averion Glynn, the Nutrition Club’s secretary. “And this year we’re going to be at the Student Involvement Fair … and it’ll be a great opportunity to meet the e-board … and we’re going to be continuing to table and outreach as much as we can.”
Glynn also spoke about the Nutrition Club’s mission statement.
“[It’s] really creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students and not just people majoring or minoring in nutrition,” said Glynn. “We really want to create outreach and a community of people interested in wellness, health and of course the nutrition part and come together to share ideas and learn from one another.”
“We really want to try and make it as accessible as possible,” continued Glynn. “We really want to try and reach out to everybody and include everybody.”
