Original songs, including three debut performances by KSC faculty members were played by the KSC Faculty Jazz Trio.
The performance was the second of its kind, featuring Lecturer and Jazz Band Director Steve Cady, Professor George Robinson, and Professor James Walker and took place on Friday, April 26, at the Redfern Arts Center’s Alumni Recital Hall.
The show featured three debut features from Walker and Cady. “Serpent” and “Megaman” were written by Cady, and “Mr. Alexis” was written by Walker. Cady and Walker also wrote the rest of the selections in addition to the three that debuted on Friday.
Walker said the faculty trio gives students a chance to see their professors in action.
“It’s nice to be able to share this side of our musical world with the students. We’re usually on the other side, critiquing their work and giving lectures from their perspective,” Walker said. “ It’s healthy to get out, perform, and show them the end result of our work.”
Robinson highlighted the importance of offering a quality musical education.
“We have an impressive and robust musical program here, and we do so in a way that strives to be nurturing and accessible,” said Robinson. “We all do our best to communicate that if you show up, and you want to put the work in, we’ll be here to help get you where you want to be and offer that support that really makes this all worthwhile.”
First-year Tuba Performance major Elijah Hashem attended the performance and said seeing the faculty in action was a unique experience.
“I’ve been looking forward to this for a while,” said Hashem. “ It was really cool to see what they can do, especially in terms of the original pieces they created. It’s inspiring to think we could be at that level someday.”
