One of the dumbest things that ends up in legislation is anti-abortion rhetoric. Making sure people have a right to health care and birth control should be clearly promoted, but apparently it is just too controversial of a topic for some people.
The New Hampshire Senate passed Senate Bill 461 which would keep records of who gets an abortion.
According to the Keene Sentinel, “SB 461 began as a Democratic-sponsored measure intended to strike wording in the state’s 2021 abortion law saying it should not be interpreted ‘as creating or recognizing a right to abortion.’ But on April 2, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted along partisan lines to replace the original language of SB 461 with the record-keeping requirement.”
Honestly the original wording of the bill is stupid as well. We absolutely should be creating and recognizing a right to abortion. People should be able to exercise their right to bodily autonomy. The government should not be allowed to force anyone to be pregnant.
One of the most moronic talking points I keep hearing is the idea that the fetus is a human life. All an abortion is the prevention from a potential life from coming to be. It is the same as using a condom or taking birth control pills. Preventing a life from coming to be is definitely not the same as ending an already existing life.
We should not be restricting abortions, especially if the parents are not in a state to have children. Forcing people to give birth is not only a disgusting violation of bodily autonomy but also a strain on the economy. People should not have more children than they can take care of. That is bad for the child and for the parents who have to raise them. When contraceptives are banned it creates more children than people can afford. This can be clearly seen in developing nations.
According to The Guardian in 2009, Pope Benedict XVI claimed that giving condoms to Africans could make the AIDS crisis in Africa worse. It is just like the Catholic Church to ignore science to keep their dogmatic views in line. The Catholic Church could do something useful by getting rid of rules that do not even appear in the Holy Bible to actually provide use to people in third-world countries. Not once in the Bible is abortion or other contraceptives prohibited.
According to Abortion Support Network, an abortion performed by Saint Brigid of Kildare was considered a miracle. According to a translation of Cogitosus, a religious story from 650 AD, “A certain woman who had taken the vow chastity fell, through youthful desire of pleasure and her womb swelled with child. Brigid, exercising the most potent strength of her ineffable faith, blessed her, causing the child to disappear, without coming to birth, and without pain.”
If stories of saints performing abortion miracles is not enough to convince you there is no problem with abortion, how about the book of Numbers. According to Numbers 5:20-21 “But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband — here the priest among your people is to put the woman under this curse — may the LORD cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell.”
In the Old Testament, abortions were considered a punishment for adultery and no verse in the New Testament contradicts abortion being seen as a good thing. There is no biblical argument against abortion and even if there was that would not be a good reason to ban it in the modern day.
