Before coming to Keene State College I attended a community college and transferred in. I would say it was a great idea for me to figure out what I wanted to do and get experience before going forth and increasing my knowledge here.
I remember when applying to community college that there were very high chances I would be accepted. However, I also realized the chances of being accepted were not 100 percent.
The Public Higher Education Task Force, created under Gov. Chris Sununu, has recommended that community colleges in New Hampshire automatically accept high school graduates. According to New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR), the task force also recommended having seven of the distinct community colleges in N.H. turn into one college with seven campuses and to have its curriculum and academic credits aligned with the state’s university system.
I think these are all great ideas, especially automatically accepting high school graduates. It is very easy to be accepted into community colleges anyway, so I do not understand why they should be barring anyone from coming in. We as a society should be promoting higher education to as many people as possible. We should especially be doing this if we have most jobs that require a degree.
Having a society of educated people is the most beneficial. Everyone should know basic facts about life and having as many people as possible be educated would help society prosper. I find it incredibly tiring to see uneducated and entitled people everywhere I go. These people need to learn for not only their own benefit but also for the benefit of people who will not take their willful ignorance and arrogance any longer.
As human beings evolve we learn from the past and seek not to repeat it. We are currently living in the information age and progress can only get better so long as people are willing to let society progress. Knowledge is power and it is good to be aware of your surroundings so we as a species can come together and solve our problems in the world.
While community college alone will not give people too much information, it is a great start. When I graduated from community college, I decided I wanted to take my education further and I applied to the amazing Keene State College. I am very grateful that I did as I feel even more educated as I am about to graduate college again.
I also feel giving people the chance to automatically get accepted into community college is great for the aspect of jobs as well. While there is certainly more to college than just employment, many jobs require a bachelor’s degree. It is very hard to get a job with only a high school diploma or an associate’s degree now and we should accommodate our system to match.
It should not be only the wealthy or those with the highest marks in high school getting educated further. In fact, people who are poorer and did not do too well in high school are the ones in greater need of higher education. We should grant them the means to seek higher education and employment.
