With the semester’s midpoint rolling by, midterms looming and spring break just over a week away, Owls are feeling confident in finishing the year strong.
Sophomore Julia McGowan said she was feeling positive about the semester so far.
“Midterms are a little stressful because it’s a lot of work but other than that [it’s good],” McGowan said.
Junior Shyann Seymour said she also felt optimistic about the semester’s workload but was not too worried about midterms.
“I mostly just do reading [because] I’m a History major, so I’m reading four different books right now and I’m just getting ready for midterms… so it’s just going to be some essays I have to bang out,” Seymour said.
Seymour said reviewing in-class presentation slides and re-reading book excerpts has proved helpful for her in terms of studying.
“I’ll just go back and find key passages, key quotes that are going to help me in my essays [and] I study with my friends,” Seymour said.
In terms of plans for spring break, Seymour said she was looking to plan an excursion to Maine.
“I’m looking at Airbnb’s right now, I think I’m going to be going to a cabin in Maine for a couple days or so, I’m not really sure it kind of depends on money so,” Seymour said.
First-year Amarrah Gates said she is also going to be traveling for spring break.
“I’m going down south on the civil rights history trip with Dottie Morris and some other students,” Gates said.
The Equinox previously reported on 2023’s civil rights trip led by Morris, associate vice president for institutional equity and diversity, where students traveled through the south to visit various historical landmarks connected to the Civil Rights Movement.
Gates, a Holocaust and Genocide Studies and History double-major, said her courseload has been manageable but midterms are still a question.
“Luckily my professors are pretty chill about midterms but we’ll see how they go,” Gates said.
Sophomore Ivan Baymar said he is very optimistic about midterms.
“I don’t have a single worry in my life right now so I think I’m pretty confident with that,” Baymar said.
First-year Ganya Brooks said she is pleased with the semester so far.
“I’m seeing a little bit [of] new people here so that’s a nice change,” Brooks said.
Junior Irini Stefanakos said her junior year has brought more schoolwork for her.
“My teachers have done a good job of evening [work] out and the work has been pretty simple so far,” Stefanakos said.
Midterms, on the other hand, are a mixed bag for Stefanakos.
“There’s some classes where I’m not quite sure what is going to be on the test based on how our classes have been going and there’s other ones that I’m pretty confident I’ll know what they look like,” Stefanakos said.
Senior Jayce Alvelo is bracing for the finish to his academic career.
“I got a lot more going on as a Graphic Design major, I’m doing portfolios, we’re working on a lot of stuff but I feel like I’m getting a good baring of my time management,” Alvelo said.
Alvelo said he hopes to lock down an early start to his career after graduation.
“I have an internship and I hope that it can help me kickstart my career before I graduate so I’m already in the field before I leave,” Alvelo said. “I’m pretty confident I’ll be able to finish strong.”
