Have you ever had a crush so intense that you started a fight club? No? Yeah me either, but apparently PJ and Josie have.
In the 2023 hit film “Bottoms,” longtime best friends PJ and Josie have intense crushes on the two most popular cheerleaders in school. Instead of just going up and talking to them, they do the far more reasonable thing and start an all-girls fight club at their school.
While watching this movie, I could not stop laughing and neither could the rest of the audience.
This film is self aware, hilarious, and one of the most unserious movies I have ever seen.
It reminded me of the old parody movies from the early 2000s. I loved how even though this movie was unserious, it still had some drama to it.
Along with drama, this film was pretty bloody for a comedy. I understand that it is a fight club but the ending of the film is surprising.
I love how even though it is supposed to be a comedy about getting girls to kiss them, it is weirdly still feminist. The women in the film have to save the football players, which is ironic because the football players are misogynistic.
I found myself disliking PJ and her motives. It seemed as if she was dragging Josie along for the ride and not caring about other people’s feelings.
One complaint I do have about this film is the writers do not write PJ a character arc. She is not a great friend to Josie and seems to stay the same even after the conflict is over.
However, my one complaint does not come close to the amount of compliments I could give this film. I absolutely love how self aware it is. The classes are laughably short, the football players are always in uniform, and so much more.
I also love the attention to detail in the background and with the music. I think I could spend the whole movie watching the background and still be entertained. It is obvious the makers of this film put a lot of work into it.
It is sad to not see this movie get a lot of praise and be overshadowed by other films. I hope to see more movies like this in the future.
I think a lot of young people would find this movie funny. It is a great sleepover movie and one to watch with friends.
I saw “Bottoms” at the Putnam Theater hosted by the Keene State Film Society. I cannot wait to review the film next weekend which is called “The Sweet East.” I have no clue what the film is about but I am sure it will be a wild ride.
