From doing the recording work at Keene State College to becoming a new professor, the music department welcomed new Music Technology Professor Peter Martel into the department.
Martel has been a member of the Keene community for a while before becoming a professor here at the school.
“He actually used to do all of the recording and post production work at Keene State for many, many years and he’s a professional recording engineer in the area,” said Music Department Chair Dr. Daniel Carberg.
Before getting involved with music and sound, Martel said he was a special education teacher.
“It is really a lot of fun to be able to use those education skills again,” said Martel.
“Peter is truly committed to providing as many opportunities to our students as possible,” said Carberg. “Just out of his commitment to give his students the most experience they can get. In the recording studio in the Elliot Center, he is spending a lot of time there mentoring our students so that they really are getting more familiar with the equipment and how to work in the recording studio.”
Martel has taken four interns under his wing this semester.
“The interns have been able to take what they’ve learned at Keene State in the classroom and I get to take them to a live event to use those skills,” said Peter Martel. “After three to four sessions I give them the controls. Bringing them into an environment where they get to do live sound is a lot of fun, and what’s fun now is I have these recording projects I am working on and they’re doing most of the work.”
Martel has not only taken student interns out of the classroom setting in learning studio recording, he also allowed them to help him present at a music technology workshop the Redfern hosted.
“We had three different presenters, and on the third day I presented,” said Martel. “I took three of my students and they all took different roles in doing the presentation, and in class I told them what I was doing and walked them through what to do and they did it in front of all the people there.”
Along with the interns, Martel said he is appreciative of all the faculty and staff within the music department who helped him get adjusted to teaching at the school and working with his interns.
“Everyone has been incredibly positive and helpful,” said Martel.
