Recently the New Hampshire House of Representatives approved emergency funding of $850,000 for Gov. Chris Sununu according to WMUR in Manchester.
Sununu requested these funds to send N.H. National Guard volunteers to the border between Texas and Mexico. During his hearing with the House fiscal committee, Gov. Sununu cited sending these resources would have a “local impact” considering the potential drug trafficking involved, which could affect N.H.. Not only is this kinda illegal, but it sounds mental.
There have been recent exchanges, both legal and otherwise, between Gov. Greg Abbott and the Federal government regarding the border issue. This has led to the deaths of people trying to cross the border, Texas law enforcement blocking U.S. border patrol having standoffs and Gov. Abbott effectively told the Federal government to “come and take it” regarding their barriers on the border.
If I were Gov. Sununu, this would not be a can of worms worth opening. I do not see how this helps anyone or anything and I fail to understand any political benefit. If he is trying to play some political 3-D chess where this will virtue signal to the Republican base that he is presidential material, then boy is his work cut out for him. I certainly would not want to implicate N.H. either if the situation comes to a head again with the Federal government.
Sununualso mentioned this spending of resources would have a “local impact,” let’s work this out shall we. Spending $850,000 on support for Texas border efforts would not qualify as local to me, but what do I know?
If Gov. Sununu was so worried about the potential implications of drug trafficking to N.H. then why not fund effort in-state? Why not fund rehab centers in-state, I mean, come on Governor! Let’s get down to brass tacks, if the health and wellness of the state is your concern then why not fund a single-payer healthcare system in the state.
You could do it, heck Slovenia can do it. They have similar population numbers and GDP numbers, you just have to raise some taxes. Alas, but that is where the problem lies. Instead of doing something useful and beneficial, you would rather waste money and signal virtue to the base. It is sad we are at this point mate, truly sad.
