The city and the college look to bolster its relationship by forming a new city college commission.
Historically, this commission is something that has existed in the past, but went dormant when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
Now, this newly formed commission will focus on workforce and internship opportunities between college students and the city business, according to President Melinda Treadwell.
The original commission was formed after the events of the infamous Pumpkin Fest riots in 2014 and focused on neighborly relationships, Treadwell said.
Newly Elected Mayor of Keene, Jay Kahn, said in an interview with The Equinox, “We have a common interest in wanting to build those bridges,” referring to partnerships between the college and the workforce needs of the community.
As for areas of need in the workforce in the community, Kahn said the possibilities are “limitless” as to where these potential opportunities can come from.
For now, the idea is still in the works, but Treadwell said she hopes for a charge to be drafted by the end of March and then to fully implement the commission for the start of the fall 2024 semester.
“We think the commission will help us develop some firm commitments for internships for students, clinical practice and creative work in the city and in the region,” Treadwell said. “I’m very, very hopeful we’ll have business partners who will build employment pipelines.”
Additionally, Treadwell suggested the possibility of some loan forgiveness programs with business partners if they hire KSC graduates. This would ultimately be through a possible investment fund to give students an incentive to stay within the region.
Khan said he has heard estimates of between 40,000 to 50,000 jobs within the city and help wanted signs are seen across the community.
“If we can create this stronger link between our college and high school graduates and the employment needs then we can be more vibrant and businesses can expand and provide greater opportunities for people in the community.”
