With recent discussion of secession in Texas, I am reminded that the South will not rise again, ever.
Republican primary elections in Texas will be held in March. When votes came in over what ballot propositions would be decided, a Texas separatist movement said they had enough signatures to vote on secession.
According to Newsweek, “Ahead of the vote, the Texas Nationalist Movement, an organization that supports Texas’ independence from the U.S., warned the GOP they have enough signatures to force a vote on the question of whether they support secession.”
Historically, states seceding has not ended well for them. The Confederate States of America seceded in 1861 due them wanting to keep slavery legal. This ended up in a civil war leading them to rejoin the United States of America in 1865. The CSA lost embarrassingly to the USA and will forever be known as traitors to the country.
Texas seceding from the USA would go horrible for them, but even worse than Texas becoming its own country would be New Hampshire becoming its own country. Many students at Keene State College have probably seen NHexit’s website advertised or are familiar with the “Free Keene” movement. I do not know how the people in these movements can have a straight face running them. N.H. becoming its own country is one of the stupidest ideas I have ever heard.
Could you imagine needing a passport to go to Massachusetts or Vermont? Texas seceding from the USA is a stupid idea too, but at least it is a state with a massive amount of landmass. Many New Hampshirites leave the state all the time, it would be such a burden to them to get extra government documents to leave legally.
It would be so much worse for out-of-state students at Keene State College. Not only would they need to leave the state to attend, but they would need to leave the country as well. I highly doubt tourism to N.H. would be as high if it was its own country.
I do not understand how anyone with even a surface level knowledge of American history could believe that secession would go well in any way. Any state that leaves the union would be rightfully known as a traitor to the nation.
The CSA got beaten hard after their secession with some cities being burned to the ground. The rest of the union would not take kindly to a state becoming its own country. Texas and N.H. will stay in the USA for the rest of the country’s future.
No one of genuine value to American politics is going to take NHexit or Texas nationalists seriously. Anyone who believes otherwise is surely mistaken. Maybe those running Free Keene, NHexit and the Texas Nationalist organization should open a history book for once to see how their movements go.
