Kicking off the spring 2024 semester, the Keene State College Film Society screened award-winning legal drama “Anatomy of a Fall” as a part of their new season of showings at the Redfern Art Center’s Putnam Theater.
The Film Society, one of Keene State College’s film clubs, showcases movies at the Putnam Theater on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. A different film is shown each week, except for spring break.
January’s films will include “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Dream Scenario.” February’s films will be “Eileen,” “Four Daughters,” “Bottoms” and “The Iron Claw.” March’s films will be “The Sweet East,” “Saltburn” and “Monster.” April’s films will be “Zone of Interest,” “Perfect Days,” “RRR” and “Stop Making Sense.”
In addition to the weekend screenings, the KSC Film Society meets on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. in the Putnam Theater for a democratically decided film screening. Attendees can bring a movie to the meeting, and then the group votes on what to watch.
“We go through each film, and everyone who brought something can pitch why we should watch it tonight,” said President Wyatt Codd. Attendees participate in three rounds of voting, and the winning film is shown during the meeting, Codd said.
Codd added, “Because it’s open to anyone on campus, we get to see a variety of films ranging from daring political drama to goofy feel-good films. That’s really the beauty of it, and the diversity is one thing we really enjoy.”
Junior and Vice President Ryan Severn said the club is a space to make new friends, enjoy movies and find a community on campus.
“Sometimes we’ll be there for hours after the movie ends, just talking about it. It’s a great community and a tight group of people from all walks of life,” said Severn.
Additionally, the Film Society hosts an annual watch party for the Academy Awards, which will take place on Mar. 10 in the Putnam Theater.
“We stream it on the theater screen, have a ton of people and have everything decorated,” said Codd. He described that the event has a red carpet and attendees dress up for the occasion. Additionally, attendees use prediction sheets to guess who will win, he said.
“We were there to witness the infamous Will Smith slap a few years ago. It was absolutely wild and amazing to share that moment of television history with such a fun group of people,” said Severn.
