Keene State men’s lacrosse walked onto the turf at the Owl Athletic Complex on April 15 with a lot to prove.
The Owls were facing the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Boston in a rematch of last season’s Little East Conference (LEC) championship game that knocked KSC out of the tournament.
This year, the Owls got their revenge, defeating the Beacons 15-8. This, though, was not the only thing they had to celebrate that day — men’s lacrosse also honored their nine graduating seniors: Lou Granger, Max Thurston, Ben Laliberte, Nathan Sickles, Michael Sheridan, Haedan Finerty, Cooper Cioffi, Ben Wright and Max Phillips.
The Owls jumped out to a roaring start after the pregame festivities, starting the game with four unanswered goals, two of which were scored by midfielder Sickles. The Owls kept on the attack for the rest of nthe half, going into the locker room with a 9-1 lead.
The second half saw some fight back from the Beacons as they opened the third quarter with three goals to bring them within five. Junior attacker Andrew Miller stopped the momentum with his second goal of the day, extending the Owl’s lead. Sickles, Miller and Colby Quiet all finished the game with hat tricks. Sophomore attackman Rex Maccarini and first-year midfielder Tim Souza each added two goals themselves. Other Owls that made the scoresheet were sophomore midfielders Giacomo Tedone and Jeff Weidenfeld.
The win keeps Keene State undefeated in conference play and in first place in the LEC, improving their overall record to 7-4. The Owls will travel to Salem, Mass. next Saturday to take on Salem State at 6 p.m. The Owls will then play two more regular season games before moving on to the LEC playoffs starting Tuesday, May 2.
