In the home opener of the 2023 season, the Keene State men’s baseball team won a tight game against the Salem State University Vikings on March 30.
The Vikings struck early in the first inning, scoring two runs off Owls senior pitcher Patrick McKeighan.
In the third inning, first-year infielder Jonathan Chatfield hit his second career home run, earning three RBI and giving the Owls the lead.
First-year pitcher Troy Brennan, who earned his first win during Tuesday’s game against the Vikings, entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched four shutout innings to keep the Vikings down to two runs.
The Owls were able to add to their lead when Chatfield scored on a passed ball in the fifth.
Salem State began to creep up on the Owls when they scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, but sophomore pitcher/ outfielder Shea Zina was able to keep them down to three runs and close out the game, earning him the save.
The Owls will have their first LEC matchup on Saturday, April 1 when they host Rhode Island College for a doubleheader, with the first game starting at 12 p.m. and the second game starting at 3 p.m.
