Keene State College women’s lacrosse recovers after a slow start

The Keene State College women’s lacrosse team got off to a rocky start, but are starting to turn things around.

The team struggled early in the year, losing four of its first five games.

“We had some really hard games. We played some good teams, one was even ranked 11th,” senior attacker Sammi Benson said. “And we just didn’t pull together offensively.”

Junior midfielder Caitlyn Corace said they played two very good teams, Springfield College and Bowdoin.

Bowdoin is ranked 14th in the country. Corace said  the team played a great game against Springfield College but were just outplayed by a better team.

The team has since gone on a three-game winning streak, bringing them up to a 4-4 overall record, and 1-0 in the Little East Conference.

The Owls won their first game against St. Michaels 15-5, but followed it with a four game slide. The Owls lost those four games with by a combined score of 62-37.

“We started to get down on ourselves,” senior attacker Jill Kirk said. “We forgot we had a hard schedule and couldn’t figure out why we weren’t winning.”

Kirk said playing tough teams like Bowdoin doesn’t help make the team better, and that it doesn’t hurt their standing among the LEC teams.

At the onset of the season the Owls were predicted to win the LEC, and now they need to keep things rolling if they want to win the conference this season.

KSC followed the Franklin Pierce win with another victory over Western Connecticut in their conference opener.

“Winning the conference is still in our grasp,” Corace said. “We play hard, and our record doesn’t prove how we’ve played.”

Benson said the team has been scouting its opponents to gear up for the bulk of their schedule.

She said they’ve been watching film of some of the other LEC teams, and its helping them prepare for what they’ll be facing in the future.

“We need to play with a lot of intensity,” Benson said. “We need to get out there in the first half, that’s big and we need to get after every ground ball.”

The Owls seem to be gaining momentum as they beat New England College 20-8.

“We’re finally pulling it together as a team and won one thankfully,” Benson said. “Now there’s a lot of positivity out there.”

Benson said the team has started communicating on defense and executing on offense. Corace said the offense is looking much better with their cutting and passing.

Corace also said freshman goalkeeper Erin Taylor has been playing very well for the Owls so far this year.

“We need to make smarter passes, and improve communication from defense to midfield and midfield to attack, up the line,” Corace said.

The Owls are being led by top goal scorers Corace and Kirk, and team leader in points, senior attacker Lauren Sawyer.

Sawyer leads the team with 35 points, including a conference-leading 25 assists.

Kirk and Corace have the team record of 16 goals in their eight games.

Benson said the team is working together now, and is keeping up a positive attitude heading into their LEC games.

“Everyone seems to take conference games more seriously,” Kirk said. “We want to win the conference, and everything is more serious.”

The Owls started off their conference schedule the right way with a big win.

Kirk said the biggest difference between this year’s team and last year’s team is the seniors. Last year’s team didn’t feature any seniors, while this year’s team has eight.

Kirk said now there’s that mentality that it’s the last season for the seniors.

Luckily for the Owls none of the teams in the LEC are getting off to a great start this season. Plymouth State University is the only team in the conference with a winning record, and with a three game winning streak the Owls are certainly the hottest team in the LEC.

“We will be winning the LEC this year, hands down,” Kirk said.

The team’s confidence appears to be back as they enter the bulk of their schedule. It’s important to keep winning and build up the team’s confidence.

The Owls may have started slow, but they look to be heating up at the right time.
