It was standing room only at The Starving Artist this past Friday, April 1 for the final show in the Feminist Collective’s weekly music series.
The weekly music series was a collaboration between the Feminist Collective, the Art Collective and the Starving Artist.
Feminist Collective and Art Collective sponsored the series, which went throughout the semester.
Keene State College students were admitted to shows on a donation-only basis while others paid $5 to get in.
The money collected from guests was donated to a local women’s shelter.
Throughout the performance, the door was constantly opening to allow more people in.
Eventually it became standing room only as the show started.
Feminist Collective President Missy Delillo was impressed by the strong attendance for this show.
“This was probably the best turnout we have had in the series; we went out with a bang, ” she said.
The show opened with a swing band known as the Half Diminished Swing Band, led by Keene State’s own Alison Dreyfuss.
Dreyfuss is a vocalist, who was reminiscent of artists popular during the era of big band and swing.
Dreyfuss sounded like a woman much older than she was, making Half Diminished sound all the more impressive.
The Half Diminished Swing Band also featured two accompanying musicians who mirrored Dreyfuss’ talent. Each song featured a stunning solo by musician Jason Koerber.
His talents at the saxophone and clarinet had the crowd roaring at several points throughout the set.
PR Representative for Feminist Collective and President of the Art Collective Chelsea Greene Shillieto said, “I really love Alison Dreyfus and Half Diminished; she rejuvenates swing music, bringing it back…if it ever left.”
Following the set of the Half Diminished Swing Band, The Starving Artist set out cake and ice cream for guests to enjoy while the next band set up.
The cake was to celebrate the birthday of Jackie Plante, an artist in residence at the Starving Artist.
Audience members were encouraged to mingle and enjoy the feminist artwork pinned up around the venue.
Guests seemed right at home at the Starving Artist and the atmosphere matched this.
Different art hung all over the area, some added just for this performance, others have a more permanent featuring.
There was even an old upright piano in the corner.
The furniture seemed to be something pulled out of both a grandmother’s house and the latest trendy magazine spread.
Every piece was mismatched and haphazardly placed.
The entire venue felt like home, and the guests acted just this way.
Roz Raskin and the Rice Cakes took the stage next and from the first notes of Happy Birthday, sung to birthday girl Jackie Plante, the audience was captivated.
The Rice Cakes played mostly original works and a few unconventional covers of more well-known songs. According to lead singer Roz, their musical influences have a wide rage too.
“We like Radiohead, The Mars Volta, and even people like Ella Fitzgerald,” he said. The bandmates, Justin Foster and Casey Belisle said, “We don’t really listen to a group and say, ‘Oh, we want to sound like Radiohead.’ These are more like bands we just like to listen to and admire.”
The Rice Cakes invited the audience members to move throughout the performance.
Many of their songs had a strong danceable beat, prompting Roz to tell the audience, “We like to encourage movement…you can move around in your chairs…or even on this miniscule dance floor up here.”
Many audience members did break out in small dance movements, getting into the Rice Cakes’ performance.
The final few minutes of the performance of the Rice Cakes they took a poll as to how they would finish the show.
“We can either bring you down and finish upbeat or we can keep you upbeat the whole time,” said Roz.
Following deliberations, they finally just asked Plante who wanted to hear the low key song followed by an upbeat song.
The final song had most of the audience dancing along; they delivered on their promise of finishing on an upbeat note.
Kelsey Legloahec, treasurer for Feminist Collective thought this performance was one of the best.
“I had seen Roz perform in Keene before, and this was probably one of the top five performances at the Starving Artist and definitely the best one Femco has put on,” she said.
At the end of the performance, Roz and the rest of the band were friendly, selling merchandise and talking with fans that stayed behind to meet with them.
Many members of the audience chose to take advantage of this opportunity and the Rice Cakes were receptive to everyone, staying until all were satisfied.
Rozz said, “We were pretty pumped about our performance tonight. It was incredibly packed, just as packed as last time we were here.”
“We love coming to the Starving Artist. It’s one of our favorite venues. It feels like our home, it’s always a warm audience.”
