The Keene State College women’s soccer team has put themselves to the test this season by scheduling multiple top tier opponents.
Possibly the biggest test for the Owls all season will be their game against Middlebury College on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
“They are a very talented, very skilled team, with a lot of finesse,” women’s soccer Head Coach Denise Lyons said.
The Owls lost to Middlebury last year, 4-0, but that shouldn’t be an indication for this match-up.
Lyons said they have played Middlebury before and beat them. She said that on any given day, anything could happen.
“I’m a coach who wants to play the best teams out there,” Lyons said.
Middlebury is in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). The NESCAC’s are highly regarded for their athletic programs, and are marked as a tough match-up on any schedule.
Lyons said a win against Middlebury would be a great moral boost for the team. Middlebury might be KSC’s most challenging game this season, but their schedule features multiple NESCAC opponents.
Lyons said their games against Tufts University, Middlebury College, and Amherst College will likely prove to be the most difficult on their schedule.
“It’s a great way to get experience,” Lyons said. “To put them up against the top opponent.”
Lyons said she schedules these games because they are likely the same caliber of teams that KSC would face in the NCAA tournament.
“It doesn’t help you to play a team you can beat 5-0,” Lyons said. “You don’t learn anything from that.”
Lyons stressed she wasn’t overlooking any opponent, but said that Middlebury would probably be the toughest team KSC has faced this season.
Although most may not believe KSC can win this game, Lyons said that Middlebury knows what a challenge the Owls can pose, and certainly will not be overlooked in this one.
The Owls are coming off back-to-back Eastern College Athletic Conference championships (ECAC), but have yet to come into their own, playing just over .500 this season.
Lyons said the team has been plagued by multiple injuries and a illness that is going around the locker room.
Lyons said she was glad the Middlebury game is still a week off, giving KSC more time to return to their full strength, and put up a good fight.
