The Keene State College cheerleading team found out during the offseason that their head coaches, Megan and Linda Lawton, would not be returning for this season.
The team, composed of women from all grades, took the news rather hard.
“A lot of the girls were really upset over the summer. There’s a few of us that have decided not to return for next season for whatever reason but those who are returning were very upset,” Junior Devan Witzenbocker said.
Every year, students participate in Midnight Madness. Before the basketball season begins, students, faculty, and fans gather in the gym at midnight to be introduced to their new teams. The cheerleading team has a large part in Midnight Madness.

“The girls were all disappointed. We had heard rumors that there would be no Midnight Madness because the girls wouldn’t be ready for it,” Senior cheerleader Alex Chaisson said.
Because the team currently doesn’t have a coach, there’s a chance they will not be ready to perform at the ceremony.
“The basketball and cheerleading teams combine to put that together, we just provide the venue. But I have only heard rumors from students in the Student Center about the potential of not having a Midnight Madness, so we aren’t positive yet,” Athletic Director John Ratliff said.
The Lawtons decided not to return for this season after the national cheerleading competition was held in Daytona Beach, FL last year.
“I had a baby this year and because there is only one gym in the school, our practice times were 6 to 8 in the morning or 8 to 10 at night. Having a newborn, those hours were just really tough,” Megan Lawton said.
“A meeting was held in the gym after we got back from Daytona for nationals and that’s when they decided to tell us they weren’t returning,” Witzenbocker said.
The Lawton’s also own a cheerleading all-star gym in Swanzey, NH called Northern Lights.
“Between the games and practices, the gym, and my baby, we just couldn’t make it work. We tried, but at the end of the season we evaluated the situation, discussed the upcoming year, and found that nothing was going to change, so we made a decision,” Lawton said.
The cheerleading team will cheer this season. They are currently in the process of interviewing a series of coaches and will decide on one in the near future.
Members of the team are involved in the selection process and are working side by side with John Ratliff to make this season happen.
“The possibility of not having a cheer team this year is zero percent,” Ratliff said. “Myself and some of the girls are beginning the interview process this week. They will be involved in the selection process.”
Typically, over the summer, cheerleaders participate in a cheer camp which is where they receive their bid to the national competition for that year.
“We didn’t have a coach, so we couldn’t go to camp, and we didn’t get a bid to nationals. It’s not just about standing on the sidelines and cheering for the basketball teams for us, it’s all about nationals. So that news was even more upsetting,” Chaisson said.
“I wish them luck this year. The program really has grown a lot. And it’s upsetting to leave but they will be fine. I just hope that someday they get some more space,” said Lawton.
Although the team expressed disappointment about the loss of their coaches, they are still optimistic about this season.
Staying positive and hoping for the best are important for the team and they are doing both.
