The Redfern Arts Center celebrates 30 years of success and has numerous performances lined up for its anniversary month.

The new Director of the Redfern, Shannon R. Mayers, says collaborating with local schools will bring attention from a variety of age groups. She says this will bring a larger array of community members to the performances held at the Redfern, furthering her goals of visibility over the next year. Keene State College is surrounded by numerous local school districts, which Mayers expressed interest in collaborating with. There are also many universities that reside within close proximity of KSC, and Mayers wants to convey to the universities, not unlike the school districts, that the Redfern is a great resource.

Mayers spoke with orientation groups at the beginning of the year to hear what they wanted to see at the Redfern. “I wonder,” Mayers said, “how many of these people will ever come back here again. Will they ever come back to the Redfern?”

That’s her main objective; what will make students more involved with the Redfern?

What do the students want to see executed in performances? What are their interests?

By using both visibility and collaboration Mayers can see a bright future for the Redfern.

Sharon Fantl, events manager at the Redfern, elaborates on exactly what visibility and collaboration mean to the Redfern.

“Just getting out there,” she said, “and having those conversations with past partnerships, new partners, just letting people know we’re here.” Fantl says that collaboration and visibility go hand-in-hand.

The collaboration comes from more people understanding what the Redfern is and what kind of purpose it serves; in turn, making the college arts center more attractive to audience members.

Also just getting the word out to people that the Redfern is a useful place for community members to come and enjoy acts and performances is important. Fantl has been working at the Redfern since February of 2007 and sees a difference in the momentum of partnership growth over the last five years. She has seen an increase with partnerships and interaction with members.

She said the arts are shifting from very genre specific, typically dance and music programs, to more of an incorporation of arts and humanities. For example, the Redfern is trying to gather the different departments together and see how they can find an appealing performance to satisfy each.

“Given that we’re an arts center on a college campus, it’s important to us to make strong connections (with other departments on the campus),” Fantl said.

Joining all the departments here at KSC would provide a larger array of performances and activities hosted by the Redfern. It will also make for more of an appeal to prospective audience members.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that can make the Redfern more visible to students. Fantl says that the location of the Redfern isn’t helping any, seeing as it is on the far side of campus. She said by even having the mailboxes in the Redfern rather than the Student Center, students would come to that side of campus more and become more involved with the Redfern.

One of the performances in which Fantl sees as collaborating with KSC departments is “Truth Values: One Girl’s Romp Through MIT’s Male Math Maze.” This comical production of Gioia de Cari examines her life as she progressed through the MIT male-dominated math department.

This performance can be viewed on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Theater at the Redfern. In the kick-off season, people can expect a variety of performances to land on the KSC campus. Starting with a march through downtown Keene led by the Asphalt Orchestra on Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. Fantl described the Orchestra as “infectious” with a great deal of energy to kick off the season. The Orchestra will also conduct a performance in the Main Theater of the Redfern following the march.

Mayers and Fantl both agree that making performances appeal to a large variety of people is key. However, not everyone is interested in the same things, which makes for a difficult decision when gathering events. Mayers conveys the point that there are numerous performances with a wide range of interests. This is vital in collaborating with the community and making Redfern known throughout the region. Other upcoming events consist of choreography conducted by Adele Myers, which the web page describes as “movement to create expressive narratives told from a distinctly female perspective.” Myers has worked with numerous theaters, however her more recent work was done at Theater in the Head. This event will take place Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Redfern box-office.
