The Night Owl Café After Hours brought in live music from The Wildskins and Lakin on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 9 p.m. This free acoustic music coffeehouse was a great success as students listened to the live bands while drinking coffee and enjoying snacks.
“After Hours is a late-night programming series supporting the mission of the Office of Student Involvement by providing quality alternative social events for students during prime weekend social hours,” as stated on the Night Owl Café official Facebook page.
Luckily for KSC students, these alternatives are said to be fun, upbeat and a great change of scenery.
According to Chelsea Harris, the Student Involvement assistant, there are many different scheduled events. One is the Third Thursday, where the Night Owl Café and Student Involvement host a fun evening for students to come and hang out. Every third Thursday brings a performer to the Night Owl Café for students to get together and relax.
Harris said, “The point is really to let students have a good time without feeling like they have to go to parties. We try and put on different events and programs to keep things exciting and new. It’s always a good time.”

The Wildskins are a group of two, Josey McFaddin and Matty Monk, playing in a soul and pop genre.
They describe themselves as a “true soul revival, bridging the gap between yesterday and today,” according to McFaddin.
The two have been traveling and playing at many different colleges and universities, as well as other venues.
Lakin also played for the crowd. She is another soulful singer, who writes songs as well as plays. She has opened for many bands including Sheryl Crow, Colbie Caillat and Brian McKnight, according to Lakin’s personal website.
Lakin said she has a successful album, “If Night Turns to Daylight,” which she describes as collection of her own creation, Lakin said. She believes her music not only is good to listen to, but also reaches one’s heart and soul.
Both performers are on the rise and are doing what they said they’ve always loved. They are shining examples to KSC students, as they are following their dreams and holding their creativity in the spotlight.
Students enjoyed listening to these musicians play as they brought a cultured and creative atmosphere for the students to appreciate. KSC has a very extensive music program and there are many musicians growing and learning on campus.
Matt O’Connor, a student at KSC, said he loved the music and the coffee.
“Who doesn’t like drinking coffee and listening to good music? The Night Owl has popcorn and soda, too. It’s a great way to meet people and mingle,” O’Connor said.
O’Connor explained how he tries to attend a lot of the events at the N.O.C.
“I always love events like this on campus,” O’Connor said.
Another student, Molly Selvidio, said, “I was just walking through the student center and I heard music so I thought I’d stop by. I might even download some of their stuff, the music was great.”
After Hours plans to have other events in the upcoming future, including magic shows, comedians, dance parties and so on. Harris said, “There are always fun things going on, and the performers we have are great.
