To spread awareness about domestic violence, the KSC Sexual Violence Prevention Marketing Team will be hosting a 5k walk and tabling event on Oct. 16, outside 48 Butler Court.
Lace Up for Light has been coordinated by Student Coordinator for the Sexual Violence Prevention Team, Lily Carter, a sophomore majoring in business management and marketing and her co-coordinator Alex, who was unavailable for comment. Similar events are supervised by Cat Workman, Project Director of the Office for Violence Against Women (OVW), and funded through a grant Keene State College received from OVW.
“We talk about different ways we can engage with the campus on keeping our campus safe, educated [and] providing resources for people,” said Carter. “Not through our team personally, but identifying supportive resources they can go to, and creating awareness about sexual violence on college campuses and around our lives every day.”
In addition to a variety of on-campus resources tabling at the event, there will be a raffle for attendees who want to participate. The raffle will be located in the same area as the Monadnock Therapy Pets’ setup. There will also be tabling by off-campus resources, including the Monadnock Center for Violence Prevention.
Carter said they will be adding chalk markings on the trail and kicking off the event with opening remarks.
“We are trying to educate our students to not just be a bystander, to watch out for those things happening around us or to be aware of their own lives,” Carter said. “I wish, as a young woman, it was talked about more, or more of a realization from everybody that [domestic violence] can happen [anytime]. It doesn’t just affect you as a young adult or as a child; you can be affected by domestic violence at any point in your life.”
