The Keene State College Men’s Soccer team lost 2-1 against Rhode Island College (RIC) during a Little East Conference (LEC) game. Having won its previous game against Plymouth State University 3-1, the team came into this game with a 2-7-3 record and a 1-2-2 LEC record on the season.
Right out of the gate, RIC put the pressure on the Owls. Over the course of the opening eight minutes of the period, they recorded eight shots, though first-year goalkeeper Tommaso Lorrai made saves to prevent any scoring from the opposing team. During the same period, the Owls only made three shots, with one by sophomore forward Luke Hartshorn on target. RIC continued to put pressure on Keene State, with three more shots over the remaining part of the period. First-year forward Edoardo Tambini hoped to find the back of the net to put the team up on the board, but RIC saved it and the game went scoreless going into halftime. During the first period, Keene was outshot 11-3.
The second period started much better than the first. Around seven minutes into the half, junior midfielder Lucas Belisle found the back of RIC’s net and scored his third goal of the season, making it 1-0 in favor of the Owls. The next shot by Keene was saved by RIC’s goalkeeper to prevent going up by two goals. 20 minutes later, RIC found its opportunity and took it, leading to a goal that tied the game up with around 17 minutes remaining. Each goalkeeper made a couple of saves during the next five minutes; however, after Lorrai made a save, he couldn’t stop the second one. RIC scored again, making it 2-1 and giving them the lead with 10 minutes left to go in the game. During those last few minutes, Keene tried to make something happen, with sophomore midfielder Adrian Buneo making a shot in the last two minutes. Unfortunately, it missed the goal, and RIC was able to hold onto the lead to win the game at 2-1.
With the loss here, the Owls are 2-8-3 on the season and 2-3-2 in the LEC. At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, the Owls will travel down to Massachusetts to play Amherst College.
