KSC Pride hosted its annual Pride Prom event with a masquerade-themed twist last week for a night of dressing up and dancing in the Night Owl Café (NOC).
The event was held on Friday, Nov. 7, and saw KSC Pride members and other students gathering in the NOC to dance the night away in their best masquerade attire and masks.
Along with a station at the event itself that allowed attendees to make their own masks, sophomore and KSC Pride Secretary Evren McTygue said the club hosted a meeting earlier in the week for members to make masks in preparation for the event.
McTygue said the club’s e-board planned the event together and the choice for a masquerade theme was a simple one, adding the e-board thought the theme “sounded cool.”
The Pride Prom is a long-term tradition for KSC Pride, meant to give students a chance to have fun and celebrate together, McTygue said.
“It’s a fun event,” said McTygue. “You can talk with people, have food, dance, socialize, meet new people, get new perspectives on things maybe.”
McTygue said they were most excited to see what masks were made and what outfits would be worn by attendees during the event.
One of the event’s attendees was first-year and KSC Pride member Kaitlyn Blouin, who said they were excited about the event’s theme.
“I just love the idea of a masquerade and I already owned this mask,” Blouin said. “I love any opportunity to listen to music and dance with my friends.”
Blouin also said her favorite part of the night was seeing everyone else’s outfits and masks for the event.
“I love all the outfits and all the masks people either made or already had, they’re all so cutesy,” Blouin said.
Sophomore Jasper Keyes said while he is not a member of KSC Pride, he was motivated to come to the event after attending the club’s mask-making meeting earlier in the week.
Keyes said they were a fan of the event’s relaxed atmosphere.
“I get wildly overwhelmed by lots of noise and people, so the fact that it’s kind of a bit more laid back is pretty nice, plus they got good music,” Keyes said.
Keyes said he enjoyed the event overall and would like to see KSC Pride host similar events again in the future.
“They got good snacks, they got good vibes. Plus, it’s fun to have a little bit of an excuse to dress up slightly more interestingly than normal college fare,” said Keyes.
Aside from their general meetings, McTygue said KSC Pride plans to host more events this year. “We’re going to do more big events this year, as we didn’t really do as much last year, so we have more things planned,” they said.
McTygue said students should consider joining KSC Pride to meet new people and make new friends.
“Talking with different kinds of people can challenge your perspectives on things,” McTygue said. “Meeting new people and getting a new community when you’re in college is really important, and it’s fun.”
