Following the recent events that have been consuming the media lately, the issue of guns has become extremely relevant.
On September 10, we lost a political activist, Charlie Kirk, to gun violence, which was streamed and is still being talked about all over the media.
Though it is unfortunate and nobody should lose their life over talking about what they believe in, gun violence is something we see in the media almost every single day.
When will the time come for prominent political figures and politicians, such as our president, to wake up and make the necessary change? How many people need to continue to lose their lives to guns for there to be a change? Gun reform is needed in our country and has been for an uncomfortably long time; without it, things are never going to get better, and in fact, continue to go downhill and get worse.
Recently, in New Hampshire, there has also been a fatal shooting and threats involving guns.
According to New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR), “The 23-year-old man accused of opening fire inside a Nashua country club Saturday night, killing one person and injuring others, made his first court appearance Monday.”
This has got to stop, as lives keep being taken in the most horrific ways, which can be easily avoided and prevented if there were to be gun reform in our country.
NHPR also reported, “Nadeau was a former employee of the country club, according to state investigators, but it isn’t clear why he allegedly returned to the venue and opened fire in a restaurant on the club’s grounds. Nadeau and DeCesare did not know each other, authorities say.”
The victim of such a heinous act of violence and the perpetrator did not know each other, which is all the more despairing because people’s lives are being stripped away and taken due to guns. With commonsense gun restrictions, these acts very well could have been prevented.
Additionally, CBS News reported on the individual who was charged with threatening to kill N.H. Gov. Kelly Ayotte.
CBS reported, “Anderson was allegedly messaging with a woman on Snapchat and said, ‘I’m going to target the NH Mayor Kelly Ayott… With my weapon of mass destruction.’ The woman told police that Anderson owned guns and that he had made mention of making pipe bombs. Anderson allegedly had shown the woman metal tubes he was using to make the bombs as well as nuts and bolts he was going to put in them, police said.”
It is incredibly scary that the political climate has gotten so intense that now, when people disagree with one another, there is an immediate need for violence. That is not the case; violence is never the answer.
We need to keep fighting for what is right to unite the nation and save the lives of those around us. We need to continue to fight for gun reform, and we need to keep talking about these issues to ensure those around us who are unfamiliar with what is going on in the world, and in their home state, like what has been occurring in N.H., grasp the urge to enforce stricter gun laws. A huge and vital step in the right direction would be to at least make the change where assault weapons are banned, that there is an expansion of background checks to cover all gun sales and to enforce permit and age restrictions. This would be essential in ensuring the safety of our people. Part of N.H.’s motto is to live free, but at what cost?
