In the team’s season opener, Keene State Field Hockey beat Rivier University 7-2 on Friday, Aug. 29. The victory marked 500 career wins for veteran Head Coach Amy Watson.
The first quarter saw fierce back and forth between the Owls and the Raiders for most of the 15 minutes. However, in the final minute of the quarter, senior forward Grace Bazin scored the breakthrough goal and put the Owls up 1-0.
Bazin and the Owls picked up where they left off to begin the second quarter, with senior forward Jennifer Erikson starting the scoring in the first three minutes, putting the team up 2-0. All was quiet on the home front until the last minutes of the quarter when some fancy passing and teamwork led to Bazin scoring her second goal and leaving the Raiders in a 3-0 deficit at the half.
In the third quarter, the Owls really took off. Junior midfielder Grace Seabury started off with the first goal, taking KSC to a 4-0 lead. The Owls put the work in the following ten minutes with a goal from senior forward Kalina Piasecki and Bazin making her third goal of the night. After three quarters, the Owls had a monstrous 6-0 lead against the Raiders.
The Raiders had a brief rally in the beginning of the last quarter, scoring two quick goals off of KSC, but they were not able to muster much more.
The Owls finished off the game with a final goal from first-year forward Lucy Dickenson and secured Watson’s 500th win, where she was met with cheers and a shower of confetti from the team.
The reigning Little East Conference champions will be staying on home turf as they look to defeat Colby Sawyer College on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m.
